Heavy Duty Towing on US 281 — Blanco County
Semi truck, commercial vehicle, and large recovery response across the Blanco County stretch of US 281 — from the Comal County line through Blanco, Johnson City, Round Mountain, and the 281/290 concurrent section. Dispatched from our Blanco yard on Koch Road.
If you're a commercial driver, you already know — 281 through Blanco County isn't I-35, and that's exactly why a lot of fleets prefer it. It's the scenic, less-congested alternative between San Antonio and Austin. But "less congested" doesn't mean easier. The stretch through Blanco County is narrow in places, drops nearly 300 feet in elevation from Brock Hollow down to Johnson City, and runs through small downtowns where you can't just call any tow service and expect them to actually show up with the right equipment.
That's where we come in. Our Blanco yard sits on Koch Road, just off 281. When you break down on the corridor — or your fleet vehicle does, or you witness an accident and need to report a recovery — you're calling a service that's actually based on the highway you're stuck on. Not Austin. Not San Antonio. Blanco. Best of Hays 2024 Best Wrecker Service winner. WreckMaster certified. 24/7 live dispatch.

The Blanco County 281 Corridor We Cover
We don't promise statewide coverage we can't deliver. Here's the stretch we actually serve well — and what makes each section worth knowing about.
Comal County Line to Blanco
The southern entry into Blanco County, just past the Guadalupe River crossing and the Spring Branch area. Four-lane divided highway through here following TxDOT's $30.5 million expansion. Steady commercial traffic moving north out of San Antonio. We respond from our Blanco yard within minutes.
Through Downtown Blanco
281 becomes the main street of Blanco — narrows down, runs past the courthouse square, deals with parked cars, pedestrians, and the occasional Saturday market traffic. Commercial vehicles get squeezed here. Our yard is just off Koch Road south of downtown, so this is our literal backyard.
Blanco to Johnson City (281/290 Concurrent)
North of Blanco, 281 picks up 290 westbound traffic for about 5.5 miles into Johnson City. This is the section that drops 290 feet in elevation through Brock Hollow into the Colorado River Valley — hard on brakes, hard on overheating engines, hard on anyone running heavy. Frequent calls here.
Johnson City (281/290 Split)
281 and 290 split at Johnson City. 281 narrows to a five-lane commercial boulevard through town, then crosses the Pedernales River heading north. The split intersection itself is one of the busier ones in the region. We work this junction regularly.
Johnson City to Round Mountain
North out of Johnson City, 281 returns to rural two-lane character past the Pedernales crossing and through Round Mountain. RR 1323 and RM 962 intersect here. Less traffic, but when something goes wrong the next service further north isn't nearby. We cover this stretch to the Blanco County line.
Beyond the County Line
If you're north of Round Mountain heading toward Marble Falls or south toward Bulverde, call us — we may still be your best option depending on what's happening up the road, but we'll tell you honestly if someone closer can serve you faster. We'd rather give you the right answer than the wrong tow.
What Actually Happens on the 281 Corridor
After years of running this corridor, here's the call pattern we see — and what makes each one different.
Overheating on the Grade into Johnson City
That ~300-foot drop from Brock Hollow into the Colorado River Valley sounds harmless on a map. It isn't — not when you're running loaded in August with the AC fighting the engine. Commercial trucks lose coolant, blow hoses, or just plain shut down on this grade more than people expect.
How we handle it: Get to the widest shoulder you can. Hazards on. Call 512-375-1215 with the direction you're heading and the nearest cross street or mile marker. If you've got a load that needs to stay cold or stable, tell us when you call — we'll plan the recovery around it.
Rollovers South of Johnson City
There's a stretch about five miles south of Johnson City where vehicles leave the roadway and hit embankments — and trucks roll. Local news has documented this for years. The terrain doesn't forgive a tired driver or a sudden swerve.
How we handle it: Heavy duty rollover recovery requires proper uprighting equipment and trained operators. We work with DPS, the Blanco County Sheriff, and insurance providers on scene. If you're witnessing one happen, dial 911 first; if you're calling for recovery, dial 512-375-1215.
Accidents at the 281/290 Junction in Johnson City
The split where 290 peels off west toward Fredericksburg is the second-busiest junction in the corridor. Tourists, commercial traffic, and locals all converge here. T-bone accidents and merge-related collisions happen.
How we handle it: Scene clearing for multi-vehicle accidents is a coordinated job. Tell our dispatcher direction of travel and which lane(s) are blocked. We bring the appropriate equipment based on what's actually wrecked — not a one-size approach.
RV & Motorhome Breakdowns Through Blanco
281 is a tourism corridor. Class A motorhomes heading up to Marble Falls or down toward Spring Branch RV parks break down regularly — often with families on board. Tire blowouts at highway speed in an RV are scary and physically demanding to recover.
How we handle it: Our heavy duty equipment handles Class A motorhomes, including loaded units. Tell the dispatcher the RV length, whether you're towing a vehicle behind, and where you'd like to be taken — RV park, repair shop, or back home.
Semi Mechanical Failures
Transmission issues, fuel pump failures, electrical shutdowns — the standard heavy duty mechanical inventory. Drivers who avoid I-35 often come through 281 specifically for the easier drive, then need help and find out their usual tow contacts don't cover the corridor.
How we handle it: We tow to your preferred repair facility — local Blanco shops, Marble Falls, San Antonio, Austin — wherever your fleet's relationship is. We can also recommend regional shops we've worked with if you don't have an existing contact.
Vehicles Off the Roadway
The narrow shoulders and ditches along the rural sections of 281 — especially north of Johnson City — claim vehicles regularly, particularly during or after rain. Commercial trucks that end up off-pavement need winching, not just towing.
How we handle it: Heavy duty winching is something we do constantly. Stay with the vehicle, hazards on, and call 512-375-1215. We'll bring the right equipment for the angle, weight, and terrain.
Why Calling a Blanco-Based Service Matters on 281
Out-of-area services can promise the world from a call center. Here's what actually changes when your tow company is local.
We're On the Highway You're Stuck On
The Blanco yard is on Koch Road, directly off 281. That's a meaningful difference when you're parked on a shoulder watching trucks fly past. We're not driving an hour from San Antonio or Austin to get to you.
We Know the Specific Stretches
The grade into Johnson City. The narrow downtown Blanco section. The 281/290 split. The rural stretch north past Round Mountain. We've recovered vehicles from every part of this corridor — we don't need GPS to tell us what kind of equipment to bring.
Real Local Dispatch — No Call Centers
When you call 512-375-1215, you're talking to someone in the area who knows what "south of Round Mountain" or "right before the Pedernales bridge" actually means. Not a national dispatch reading your location off a map.
Best of Hays 2024 Recognition
The local community voted us Best Wrecker Service in Hays County. We work across county lines, but the reputation comes from the same standard of work whether the call is in Wimberley, Dripping Springs, or Blanco County on 281.
WreckMaster Certified Heavy Duty
Modern heavy duty equipment is only as good as the operator. WreckMaster training covers damage-free recovery, scene safety, and proper technique for the specific terrain we work in.
We'll Tell You If We're Not the Right Call
If you're far enough north that someone closer would serve you better — we'll say so. Heavy duty towing is a relationship business. We'd rather give you the right answer than over-promise and underdeliver.

Broken Down on 281? Here's What Speeds Things Up
If you've never had to call a heavy duty service before, this is what helps us get the right truck moving fast:
Direction of travel: Northbound (heading toward Marble Falls) or southbound (heading toward San Antonio)?
Nearest landmark: "Just south of Johnson City," "near the 281/290 split," "past Round Mountain," etc. Mile markers are great when you can see one — landmarks work fine when you can't.
Vehicle and load: What class is it, how heavy is the load, what is it. "Loaded reefer running hot" tells us more than "my truck broke down."
The actual problem: Mechanical failure, accident, rollover, off the road, blown tire. Each gets different equipment.
Where it's going: Your usual repair facility? A specific shop? Don't know yet? We can recommend.
If you don't have all of this — call anyway. We'll figure it out together. The worst call is the one you didn't make.
Honest Answers About 281 Heavy Duty Towing
How fast can you actually reach me on 281?
It depends on where you are and what's happening locally — there's no honest universal answer. Our Blanco yard is on Koch Road, directly off 281. For calls between Blanco and Round Mountain, you're typically looking at our fastest response in the area. For calls further south near the Comal County line or further north past the county line, we'll give you a real ETA when you call. Call 512-375-1215 and our dispatcher will tell you straight.
Do you tow loaded semis through the 281 grade into Johnson City?
Yes, with the same caveat we'd give anyone: it depends on the load. The grade itself isn't the problem — we work it constantly. Total weight, what you're hauling, and whether the freight can be moved or transferred are the real questions. We assess each call individually and may recommend cargo transfer before towing if it's the right call for the load and the equipment. We won't take on a tow we shouldn't.
What does heavy duty towing cost on 281?
There isn't a flat number we can quote on a website — and any service that gives you one is doing it to get the call, not to be accurate. Pricing depends on the vehicle weight, distance, time of day, complexity (loaded vs. unloaded, winching required, road conditions), and whether you have a fleet account. What we can promise: an upfront estimate over the phone before we dispatch, and no surprises on the invoice. Call 512-375-1215 with the specifics for a real number.
Do you handle rollover recoveries on the 281 corridor?
Yes. Rollover recovery requires specific uprighting equipment and operators trained for it — not just any heavy duty tow truck can do it safely. Our team is WreckMaster certified and we coordinate with DPS, the Blanco County Sheriff, and Hill Country EMS on scene as needed. Call 512-375-1215 with the location and what kind of vehicle has rolled.
Can you set up a fleet account for our trucks running this corridor?
Yes, and it's worth doing before you need us. Our Corporate Accounts include priority response, direct billing, and pre-set pricing. We work with regional freight, oil and gas, construction, food and beverage distribution, and tour operators that run 281 regularly. Call 512-375-1215 to talk through it directly.
My Class A motorhome broke down — do you handle RVs too?
Yes. Heavy duty equipment handles Class A motorhomes, fifth-wheels with the right setup, and tour buses. The 281 corridor is a real tourism route — we work RV breakdowns regularly. Tell our dispatcher the RV length, whether you're towing a vehicle behind, and any pets or people who need to be considered in the dispatch. We'll plan it accordingly.
What if I'm north of Round Mountain — should I still call you?
Call us. Worst case, we'll tell you honestly if someone closer to Marble Falls or Burnet would reach you faster — but a lot depends on the time of day and what else is happening. We'd rather give you a real recommendation than have you waste time guessing.
